for ahma

textile | 2024

I made this piece in honor of the third anniversary of my grandmother's passing. The last time I saw her was right before I left China, when I was seven. Over the years, language barriers and physical distance had kept us from any meaningful conversation beyond "hello." Her passing, and my family's inability to attend her funeral during COVID, has made me reflect on our connections with those we didn't get to spend time with, but despite this, we still carry their legacies within us. This piece takes its inspiration from the I Ching coin, where the circle represents the heavens and the square represents the earth. Between them lies our yearning for each other.
